The situation in Mayotte remains extremely tense, and the consequences of “Chido” are still unclear. After the devastating cyclone in the French overseas territory, the Interior Ministry has imposed a night-time curfew to prevent looting. It applies between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., the ministry announced in Paris on Tuesday.
On the Mayotte archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 21 deaths have been reported in the island’s only hospital. According to Prime Minister François Bayrou, another 1,700 people have been reported injured, including 200 seriously injured. Local authorities expect several hundred deaths. The prefecture set up a search mission for the dead. The airport was closed to civilian flights and concerns about the drinking water supply are growing.
