The Chase star Darragh Ennis, known onscreen as The Menace, has hit back at online trolling he’s received after an episode aired.

Tuesday night saw the Chaser, 45, take on three contestants in the final round after only catching one out.

The players walked away with their £9000 of winnings, while viewers at home took to social media to criticise Darragh’s performance, after he missed questions on zombie film Day of the Dead and the location of George Washington University.

‘I think Darragh was under the weather could tell in his voice. Even chasers are allowed off days,’ viewer @minaciousminx40 said.

Others were harsher, with @philwithy69 writing: ‘@bones_giles a very bad day at the office.’

‘Chaser not on form,’ @sonicr360 said, while @IndeedItsMark wrote: ‘Just goes to show even a chaser can have a glitch of confidence. Darragh had a right mare there! Well done team!’

Taking to X after the show aired, Darragh wrote: ‘On tonight’s show, I had a bad few minutes.

‘It got away from me and I started to miss the clues in the question.

‘It happens, we all have bad days.

‘I don’t mind, but maybe consider what you post online about people who are in the public eye, it can be damaging.’

While most followers shared messages of love and support, Darragh went on to reply to some criticism in the comments, responding to one that read ‘Taking yourself a bit serious aren’t you?’ with: ‘Very clearly said I don’t mind. Just pointing out how damaging online vitriol can be to some people and encouraging people to maybe think twice.’

‘Never be a bad loser, important lesson in life,’ he added to another, and elsewhere wrote: ‘Not my best day it has to be said.’

Darragh, who is a former Chase contestant and defeated Paul Sinha, previously spoke about what it takes to be a great Chaser.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘Obviously you have to have good knowledge but, besides that, you need to be able to accept getting pushed back without losing your mental flow.

He added: ‘Also, you need to have a bit of a personality because people forget this isn’t only a quiz show, it’s also an entertainment show.’

‘More than half the job is interacting with the contestants and with Brad [host, Bradley Walsh].

‘I often get people saying, ‘Oh, I’d be much better at quizzing than you.’ I’m sure you are. That’s not the point. Would you be better at sitting in that seat, doing that job? Probably not.’

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
