Tesla has recalled more than two million cars after they were found to have a serious safety defect.

A top US auto-safety regulator said its autopilot system does not do enough to prevent misuse and needs to be fixed immediately.

The driver assistance function is inadequate for keeping drivers engaged and could lead to foreseeable misuse, an investigation found.

It comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has spent years examining potential defects on Elon Musk’s Tesla vehicles.

The NHTSA said the investigation will also remain open as it continues to monitor the effectiveness of repairs carried out by Tesla.

A spokesman told Bloomberg on Wednesday: ‘Automated technology holds great promise for improving safety, but only when it is deployed responsibly.

‘Today’s action is an example of improving automated systems by prioritising safety.’

It’s the second recall of Tesla cars in 2023 over its automated driving systems which have come under scrutiny following hundreds of crashes this year.

CEO Mr Musk has predicted that his company is close to offering complete autonomy, several issues have caused problems.

The latest safety woes come after thousands of Tesla cars were also recalled earlier this year because of issues with their seatbelts.

The steering wheels of two Model Y SUVs also fell off while being driven.
