Austin Butler opened up and shared a heart-wrenching story about his late mother years after she died in 2014 from cancer.

The actor, 31, suffered from depression following her untimely death when he was 23 and revealed a childhood memory he shared with Lori during promotion for his new Yves Saint Laurent fragrance.

He explained his earliest memory of a lasting scent and opted to reflect on the years his mother was still alive when picking an anecdote to attach to his favourite smell.

The Elvis star said: ‘Interestingly it is the orange blossom,’ when questioned about his strongest scent-related memory.

Austin continued telling The Times: ‘Because in my childhood home there was this orange tree in the backyard and I remember so vividly when the tree would bloom.

‘My mother and I would go in the backyard and pick oranges and then go inside to make orange juice. And that really hit me.’

At the beginning of the year, the Oscar-nominated star spoke about his mum Lori and shared how her death had impacted him.

He told The Hollywood Reporter in January: ‘After my mom passed away, I’d never experienced pain like that before, and I started to question.

‘I was dealing with grief, but it was also this feeling that I wasn’t aligned with something that felt truly fulfilling.

‘I thought, “I’ve got a little bit of money in the bank. I’ll just take time off [from acting].” Then I started sinking into a deeper and deeper depression.

‘It was about six or eight months of that.’

Most recently, the A-lister opened up about another relationship in his life and revealed the biggest career advice he received from his Elvis co-star Tom Hanks.

He revealed Tom advised him to jump straight into another project after he finished his Elvis Presley role to avoid ‘emotional whiplash’.

The American actor received a Bafta and a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of the King of Rock and Roll in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic and spent two years preparing for the part.

Austin will now star in a Second World War drama mini-series, titled Masters Of The Air, which is being executive produced by Tom alongside Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman.

He explained to The Sunday Times ahead of his new role that the acting veteran urged: ‘You have immersed yourself so deeply in Elvis that, for your mental health, it would be wise to go straight into something else.

‘If you just jump off the train, you might have emotional whiplash – And, you know, I’ve got this thing I’m producing.’
