China’s deadly earthquake that struck the southwest on Monday has seen the death toll rise to 82. There are fears that rain and possible mudslides will affect the search for the many people who remain missing.

The Guardian says China recorded its highest temperatures and one of its lowest levels of rainfall in 61 years during a two-month summer heatwave that caused forest fires, damaged crops and hit power supplies, the national meteorological agency said.

China experienced a devastating 6.6 magnitude earthquake on Monday, which claimed at least 74 lives.
Major roads leading to the epicentre of the earthquake in the southwestern province of Sichuan have started to reopen and traffic has resumed.
