Sunny spells are finally on the way – but don’t put your umbrella down just yet

In the world of UK weather in December, the phrase ‘sunny spells’ is about as good as it gets.

With the weekend’s stormy weather a distant memory, the skies are set to clear a little today and temperatures will continue to mellow out.

So on X, the Met Office asked the question on every Briton’s mind: ‘Will you need your sunglasses or rain jackets?’

The answer, for the most part, depends on where you live.

A yellow weather warning that has been in place since yesterday that covers North East England and a stretch of eastern Scotland will be lifted by 8am.

The Met Office issues yellow alerts if the weather poses some ‘low-level impacts’, such as disruption to travel or flooding.

People in Northumberland, Scotland’s Central, Tayside and Fife regions as well as across some parts of South West Scotland may wake up to flooding in their homes or businesses.

Where is the yellow weather warning today?

A yellow weather warning for rain from yesterday will come to an end at 8am today.

It means the chances of flooding and travel disruption are far less likely and, if they do happen, will be far less impactful.

    The affected areas included:

    North East England:

    Northumberland

    Central, Tayside and Fife:

    Angus
    Clackmannanshire
    Dundee
    Falkirk
    Fife
    Perth and Kinross
    Stirling

    South-West Scotland, Lothian Borders:

    East Lothian
    Edinburgh
    Midlothian Council
    Scottish Borders
    West Lothian

Commuters are being warned to expect their journey times to be a little longer this morning, with spray and flooding on roads leading to delays.

‘Much of the warning area is expected to see 10-20 mm of rainfall during this time, and in some places, particularly east-facing areas of higher ground, 30-40mm is likely, which could lead to some flooding,’ the weather service says.

The rain is largely set to clear southeast in the hourly hours, though.

Other than in south-east and eastern England, most Britons should expect today to be dry and bright with – you guessed it – sunny spells throughout.

Showers will ease in Wales this morning as the clouds break apart to give way to the sun by the afternoon. The bitter winds will also die down.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will see a frosty and foggy start to the day before the sun will eventually begin to shine.

People in regions like Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex are being told to keep hold of their umbrellas to hand as patchy but relatively light to moderate rain is expected later this morning into the evening.

However, another wave of rain will arrive across the far northwest by then.

The rain will first hammer down on Northern Ireland from about 7pm, forecasters predict, before blanketing western Scotland just before midnight.

And maybe don’t pack your umbrella away anytime soon.

The Met Office says tomorrow will see a few showers expected in the west and north-west of Scotland.

‘Mostly cloudy on Friday and Saturday, with drizzle for hills in the north and west. Breezy, with temperatures above average,’ the weather service adds.
