    Sunday Papers – Royals heal rifts ahead of Jubilee & PM ‘trashing’ Tory identity

    A variety of stories lead the Sunday papers, with Jubilee preparations and royal news being a popular lead for the tabloids whilst most broadsheets are leading with a political splash. 

    A story featured on most front pages is Liverpool’s loss to Real Madrid – who have been crowned champions of Europe after winning the European championship 1-0 – despite the Reds looking like the more dominant team. The match was delayed by 30 minutes and there have been reports French police had tear-gassed some Liverpool fans.

    Sunday Express – Gove fights to save PM’s skin

    The Sunday Express leads with Michael Gove insisting that Boris Johnson is the best person to lead the country. The paper quotes the Levelling Up Secretary as saying he’s “absolutely confident” the PM can win the next election and that “no one in government has his energy, his determination, his vision.”

    The Mail On Sunday – Cheers Ma’am 

    The Mail On Sunday leads with news that pint glasses will be adorned with the symbol of a crown for the first time in nearly 20 years. The paper says that the government is to launch a consultation on lifting restrictions on imperial weights to mark the Jubilee next week. The headline reads: “Cheers ma’am!”

    Sunday People – William and Harry’s facetime peace talks 

    Princes William and Harry are trying to make peace with each other, the Sunday People reports. The two brothers have reportedly been exchanging regular messages online, and been having face-to-face chats by themselves ahead of seeing each other at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

    Daily Star Sunday – One is not amused 

    The Daily Star Sunday has a story about jubilee bunting being banned because it is too heavy. Some councils have reportedly banned the use of Jubilee bunting on lampposts because it is too heavy. The headline reads: “One is not amused!

    Sunday Mirror – Meghan to heal rift with sick father

    The Sunday Mirror splashes on Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, reaching out to her father Thomas as he is released from hospital following a four-year estrangement. “Meghan to heal rift with sick dad”, reads the headline in the Sunday Mirror – Meg’s dad was recently released from hospital following a reported stroke.

    The Observer – Johnson is trashing Tory identity, party grandees warn 

    Senior Tories are warning the Prime Minister has plunged the Conservative party into an acute identity crisis as a result of Partygate and U-turns over tax policy, the Observer is leading on. Former party leader Iain Duncan Smith is among those who have spoken to the paper, saying recent tax rises have undermined a “core message” that has helped the Conservatives win recent general elections.

    The Sunday Times splashes on the Sue Gray report being “diluted” after pressure from Downing Street.

    The Sunday Telegraph – PM’s war on rip off petrol stations 

    Boris Johnson is declaring war on petrol stations that fail to pass on the government’s fuel cut, according to the Sunday Telegraph. The PM is said to want to “name and shame” petrol stations that are failing to pass the duel duty cut that was introduced in March on to customers. Source told the paper the PM has “expressed fury” that the 5p-a-litre cut is failing to materialise at pumps. 

    The front splash features pictures of Liverpool fans locked out the stadium in France ahead of the Reds’ loss to Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League. The game was delayed by 30 minutes and some fans were tear-gassed by French police.
