Sunday Papers: Euro 2020 England vs Italy – ‘The Pride of England’
The Sunday papers are heavily dominated by England’s Euro 2020 final against Italy. The English football anthem Three Lions is back in the UK Top 10 singles chart – with many papers’ picking up on it. Elsewhere, the Sunday papers report the time between jabs may be cut to four weeks in a bid to drive up inoculations amongst young men – with England football team, reportedly, being enlisted to back the jab.
“We Kane be heroes” proclaims the Sunday Mirror, with a picture of the England captain and four of his teammates.
The squad is joined on the front of the Sunday People by a photo of a roaring lion, and the headline “pride of England”.
And the Sun on Sunday predicts “tonight’s gonna be a good night” – a headline that’s more of a nod to the Black Eyed Peas than Baddiel and Skinner.
Queen and William: Come on England
The Mail on Sunday leads with a good luck message from senior royals ahead of the Euro 2020 final at Wembley. The Queen praised the “spirit, commitment and pride” of the England team ahead of tonight’s game against Italy. The paper notes Prince William has also sent his best wishes to England in a message that the Mail on Sunday says captures “the mood of a nervously expectant nation.”

The Sunday Express describes the Queen’s message as “heartfelt” and notes how Her Majesty referred to her presentation of the World Cup to England captain Bobby Moore in 1966.
Hospital waiting lists could top 13m
The Queen’s message leads the Sunday Telegraph which also carries supportive words from Boris Johnson and Sir Keir Starmer. The paper’s main picture is of Captain Harry Kane.
Elsewhere, the paper reports a warning from new Health Secretary Sajid Javid who says internal projections estimate hospital waiting lists could top 13 million in months.
Wait between jabs ‘could be cut to 4 weeks’
The gap between COVID jabs could be shortened to just four weeks in a bid to drive up inoculations amongst young men, the Sunday Times reports. It says Downing Street is keen to accelerate the rollout of second doses to build up protection ahead of the planned easing of most remaining curbs in England on 19 July.
The England football team and YouTube influencers are to be enlisted to back the jabs, it reports.
Public alarm grows at PM’s plan for Covid ‘freedom day’
The Observer reports a new opinion poll as suggesting half of the public want some Covid rules to stay in place in England. It says doctors are demanding face mask mandates remain inside hospitals and regional mayors are urging their continued use on public transport.
Ahead of the Euro 2020 final, the Observer says England manager Gareth Southgate has told the team to stay calm amid the hype.
