Sunday Mirror - Tories want Big Ben for PM

Summary of the front page

The Sunday Mirror asks: “What’s next for Britain?” amid the current reports that Tories are plotting to oust prime minister Liz Truss – just five weeks into her premiership.

The paper says “rattled” Tories want Defence Secretary Ben Wallace to replace Liz Truss as prime minister. Some of the MPs turning on Liz Truss want Wallace to “step in”, the paper claims, with Rishi Sunak being given back his job as chancellor.

The paper’s other lead story features a plea from a pregnant girlfriend of Strictly star Helen Skelton’s ex-husband, who asks people to “stop judging her.”

Top Tory tells Liz Truss to apologise to Brits after public left ‘frightened’

Mirror says Liz Truss must apologise to the British people as her calamitous economic plans have left the public “frightened”, a top Tory has said.

Education Committee chairman Robert Halfon accused his party of acting like “libertarian jihadists” and treating the country like “laboratory mice” for their hard line policies.

In a blistering intervention, Mr Halfon said the crisis-hit PM needed to perform a “dramatic reset” in the coming days.

He told Sky News: “I worry that over the last few weeks the government has looked like libertarian jihadists and treated the whole country as laboratory mice to carry out ultra, ultra free market experiments. And this is not where the country is.

“There’s been one horror story after another.”

One million workers may strike as union boss backs huge joint walkout for better pay

Mirror says One million-plus workers may strike in a coordinated action this winter to get fair pay, says a union leader.

Poor pay during a cost-of-living crisis means workers must join forces to demand fair wages, says Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham.

She is talking with other union bosses about joining forces to secure the best deal for workers who are “fighting to stand still”.

She said: “You’ve got ourselves, Unison, GMB – and already you’re talking over a million workers.

“The aim is not to strike, the aim is to get money in the hands of workers who are doing a fair day’s work and expect a fair day’s pay.

Tory MPs plotting to get rid of Liz Truss as PM and replace her with Ben Wallace

Mirror says Britain deserves an election NOW, Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer says – as warring Tories seek to dump Liz Truss as PM.

Plotters are turning to Defence Secretary Ben Wallace to avoid total carnage at the polls.

A group of MPs want him as the new PM, with Rishi Sunak back as Chancellor in a bid to calm the financial markets.

They hope Ms Truss will step aside. But Sir Keir says a new Tory is NOT the answer – and that a general election IS.

Writing in the Sunday Mirror, he says: “The quicker this shambolic government is gone, the quicker we can get on with the job of fixing their mess and rebuilding our country.”

Australia floods: Cities hit by raging waters as 8,000 homes are left underwater

Mirror says Cities have been hit by raging waters with 8,000 homes left underwater in Australia.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited flood-hit parts of Victoria state, including the city of Melbourne, as three states continued to grapple with a flood crisis sparked by days of heavy rain.

Warnings were current for flood-impacted parts of Victoria, southern New South Wales and northern regions of Tasmania after a weather system earlier this week dumped more than a month’s worth of rain on the southeast.

The crisis comes after Australia’s eastern states were hit by severe flooding in early 2022 as the country endures a third consecutive La Nina weather event, bringing heavy rains.
