The Observer – Sunak pushes to axe HS2 link ahead of Tory conference

The Observer says Rishi Sunak is facing a huge backlash from senior Tories amid signs he is ready to scrap the northern section of HS2. The paper says there are strong rumours at least one “middle-ranking” minister could resign if the route is cut back.

The paper looks at the timing of any announcements, with a source saying the plan is to do it before the Conservative party conference due to get under way next weekend in Manchester.
