Sunak must be replaced as PM, says former cabinet minister Sir Simon Clarke
A senior Tory MP is urging his party to replace Rishi Sunak as prime minister to avoid a potential “massacre” in the upcoming general election. Sir Simon Clarke, in a Telegraph article, emphasises the need for a leader with instincts that align with the majority.
Sir Simon, who previously rebelled on the Rwanda Bill, criticises the Conservatives for losing “key voters” due to a lack of boldness on immigration and government reform. Downing Street has not responded yet.
However, some ex-Tory cabinet ministers, including Priti Patel and David Davis, are critical of Sir Simon’s article. Former home secretary Priti accuses him of “facile and divisive self-indulgence,” while Davis condemns MPs prioritising personal ambitions over the UK’s best interests.
A general election is expected in the second half of this year. The latest the next election could legally be held is 28 January 2025.
