**Warning, spoilers for Succession season 4 episode 1!**
Although Succession fans rejoiced over the launch of the fourth and final season, many were left heartbroken by the end of episode 1 which confirmed Shiv Roy and Tom Wamsbsgans’ divorce.
The brand new instalment kicked off in the UK on Monday night and relationships proved to be strained following the epic betrayal at the end of series three, which saw Tom (Mathew Macfadyen) tip off Logan Roy (Brian Cox) that his children were trying to topple him from his empire.
As the latest chapter got underway, it quickly became clear that the Roy siblings hadn’t spoken to their father since the failed coup.
And it soon transpired that Tom and Shiv’s marriage was in also in trouble, with the pair on a break from one another and engaging in fraught phone calls.
Towards the end of the episode though, the couple finally came face-to-face as Shiv (Sarah Snook) went back to their luxury New York apartment to collect more clothes, with Tom asking her if she ‘wanted to talk.’

Succession fans described their split scene as ‘one of the most beautifully sad break-ups of all time’ (Picture: HBO)
But rather than get into talking about ‘all the pain’ in the marriage, a visibly upset Shiv suggested: ‘I think it might be time for you and I to move on.’
And although not much else was said on the matter, the couple then got onto bed and held each other’s hands in a scene that has been dubbed by fans as ‘one of the most beautifully sad break-ups of all time’.
Taking to Twitter as they wiped tears from their eyes, one wrote: ‘So many feelings about that incredible #Succession season premiere but that shot of Shiv and Tom on the bed was so beautifully heartbreaking and perfectly composed.’
Echoing a similar sentiment, another posted: ‘That Shiv and Tom scene is one of the most well written breakup scenes I have ever seen on television. My GOD I will never be over it. Took the damn wind out of me.’

A third said: ‘This scene with Shiv and Tom might be one of the most beautifully sad break-ups of all time. It’s one of those scenes you’ll always remember. That’s art right there.’
Is it really all over for Tom and Shiv? We’re holding out hope that this isn’t actually the end.
Succession continues on Monday on Sky Atlantic and Now.
