Strictly Come Dancing star Angela Rippon suffered an awkward malfunction during last night’s live show, resulting in her partner Kai Widdrington having to step in to help.

Over the past four weeks, the radio and TV presenter has astounded fans of the BBC series on the dancefloor, proving she has what it takes to go all the way in the competition.

During last night’s show, the 79-year-old wowed the audience once again as she and Kai, 28, performed a sensual Rumba to Conchita Wurst’s Rise Like A Phoenix, with Angela sliding into splits and staring down the camera with a look of fierce determination.

However, as the pair made their way to the spot where they’d receive their critiques from the judges, a mishap occurred.

As Angela began to walk, she realised that something was wrong with one of her shoes, something that might have happened as a result of her spinning gracefully on one foot as part of the routine.

Presenter Tess Daly expressed concern, while Kai didn’t hesitate to crouch down so that he could fix Angela’s shoe issue before the judging began.

Tess reassured viewers that there was nothing to worry about as it was just a ‘wardrobe malfunction’… and soon, Kai fixed her shoe up to the best of their ability so that they could continue with the show.

When it came to the judges, they delivered glowing feedback to the perfectly-matched pairing.

Anton Du Beke said that there routine was ‘exactly the sort of Rumba I like’, while Craig Revel Horwood said that he ‘absolutely loved it’.

Motsi Mabuse did draw attention to the shoe mishap, before also saying: ‘I feel like you are just a message for all women out there, saying: “Don’t stop, life is good.”’

Head judge Shirley Ballas added that she was ‘shocked’ over the ‘beautiful’ dance.

Angela and Kai received a score of 31 out of a possible 40 for the Rumba, with three eights and one seven.

That placed them joint fourth on the leaderboard alongside Amanda Abbington and Giovanni Pernice, who earned the same score for their Foxtrot to Fleetwood Mac’s Everywhere.

Meanwhile, Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin soared to the top with 37 for their dance to Whitney Houston’s Million Dollar Bill, as the pair received the earliest 10 for a Cha-Cha-Cha ever in Strictly history.

The Strictly Come Dancing results show airs tonight at 7.15pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
