Storm Larisa causes travel chaos with trains and flights cancelled as snow continues

The i says Motorists have spent the night trapped in their cars and airports have been forced to close their runways as Storm Larisa continues to batter parts of the country.

Many in the UK have woken up to deep snow on Friday as Scotland recorded some of the coldest March temperatures for 13 years.

Drivers spent hours trapped on the M62, which runs between Liverpool and Hull, overnight and into Friday morning.

At 7am on Friday National Highways tweeted that there were delays of at least three hours on the M62 eastbound between Rochdale and Huddersfield and delays of 90 minutes westbound.

National Highways issued a “severe weather alert” for snow covering the North East, North West and Midlands regions until 8am on Friday, where motorists have been warned not to drive unless their journey is essential.
