The Independent – Starmer’s 35 new bills to ‘take back control’ of Britain

    July 17, 2024

Sir Keir Starmer has made it clear that wealth creation and growth will be his priorities ahead of Wednesday’s King’s Speech, The Independent writes. Elsewhere, Donald Trump picked his running mate yesterday – JD Vance, a man who once said the UK was an ‘Islamist country’.

The paper bids farewell to England boss Gareth Southgate who resigned yesterday. The paper agrees with Southgate’s assessment that England needs a new boss to lead them now.

Starmer apes Brexiteers as he vows to ‘take back control’ in 35-bill King’s Speech

Sir Keir Starmer has made it clear that wealth creation and economic growth will be his overriding priorities when Labour’s first programme for government since November 2009 is unveiled in parliament.

In a nod to the promises made by supporters of Brexit, the prime minister has promised to “take back control” of the country and “lay the foundations of the real change” it says people are desperate to see.

When King Charles reads out the speech in the Lords for the state opening of parliament at 1pm on Wednesday, the moment will mark the beginning of a major reset for the country.

Author and Ohio senator JD Vance was announced as Mr Trump’s running mate on Monday, just two days after an attempt to assassinate the former president, who is challenging Joe Biden for the White House in November.

Politicians from across the spectrum have condemned Mr Vance’s comments, with former Tory co-chair Sayeeda Warsi suggesting the special relationship between the UK and the US has “become no more than a racist joke”. Writing for The Independent, she added: “It bodes for really dangerous times ahead.”

The Football Association had a plan in place for Gareth Southgate’s departure months before Euro 2024, since it was widely expected, and there is a view in football that managers like Graham Potter have turned down other jobs in anticipation. But the reality of making decisions can be very different from the build-up.

The FA are now in that classic bind that comes with these situations where you’re replacing a figure so associated with a high-profile job. There’s what they can do, what they want to do and what they should do. Those aren’t necessarily all the same thing.
