The story is covered by most of the newspaper front pages. Despite political leanings, the reports are similar in coverage and tone.

Trending – PM Sir Keir Starmer speaks at the Labour Party conference – ‘I’ll fix Britain’

Much of today’s trending stories revolve around the prime minister’s speech at the Labour Party conference.

The prime minister vowed to rebuild Britain, saying tough times lay ahead but the plans to get Britain back on track have already been rolled out. The central message of Starmer’s speech is ‘stick with me’ as we suffer now but will benefit later – the PM seems to be laying the groundwork for potential tax rises in next month’s Budget.

    Basic facts

    • The Labour Party Conference started on Sunday
    • Chancellor Rachel Reeves promised no return to austerity in her speech
    • The PM speech hinted at tax rises next month
    • He told Britain tough times lay ahead but Britain will get back on track
    • The party conference comes amid a row over party donations, party sleaze and the chancellor’s ‘doom-and-gloom’ warnings about the public finances

    The reaction

There isn’t a great deal of reaction from the newspapers. Almost all of the papers pick up on the prime minister’s hint at tax rises next month, but the language used isn’t as inflammatory as you’d imagine.

Online, there are reactions to Starmer’s gaffe – in which he said “Bring back the sausages” instead of “Bring back the hostages.”

Keir Starmer vows to add VAT on private schools citing he wants to level the playing field in education.

Meanwhile, he is happy to accept a £20,000 donation for accommodation so his 16-year-old som could study "peacefully" for his GCSE exam, giving him an unfair advantage…

The heckler was an 18 year old Labour Party member challenging Keir Starmer on his government's continued support for Israel in light of its mass slaughter of Gazan children.

What, pray tell, does that have to do with Jeremy Corbyn? https://t.co/Fqh4lq6jmd

I just spoke to the young protestor who was violently manhandled out of Labour conference for opposing arming Israel’s genocide.

He was aggressively grabbed by the neck, leaving these red marks.
