A Spanish duke who has named his daughter Sofía Fernanda Dolores Cayetana Teresa Ángela de la Cruz Micaela del Santísimo Sacramento del Perpetuo Socorro de la Santísima Trinidad y de Todos Los Santos has been told it is too long.
The Duke and Duchess of Huéscar now stand accused of giving their daughter too many names to be legally registered by the civil registry.
Fernando Juan Fitz-James Stuart y de Solís, 33, the 17th Duke of Huéscar, and heir apparent to the dukedom of Alba, and Sofía Palazuelo, 31, his wife, baptised their daughter in Seville, Spain, on October 7.
‘The girl will not be able to be registered in the civil registry with a string of names that surpass all rules, even though it is a tribute to the deceased Duchess of Alba and other members of the family and includes religious devotions,’ El País reported.
This refers to the late matriarch of the dynasty who was simply called Cayetana.
She holds the family record for the longest name which is María del Rosario Cayetana Paloma Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Fernanda Teresa Francisca de Paula Lourdes Antonia Josefa Fausta Rita Castor Dorotea Santa Esperanza Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva Falcó y Gurtubay.
The newspaper added the civil registry rules mean the name given to a child must contain ‘no more than one compound name and no more than two simple ones.
‘The girl has a few more than the five simple names allowed,’ it added.
