Spain 2-1 Netherlands: Spain beat Dutch to reach first World Cup semi
Spain’s teenage winger, Salma Paralluelo, emerged from the sidelines to secure a dramatic victory in the 111th minute, propelling Spain past the Netherlands and into their first Women’s World Cup semi-finals.
In regular time, Mariona Caldentey appeared to secure Spain’s triumph by converting an 80th-minute penalty, ricocheting the ball off the post, after Stefanie van der Gragt’s handball offence within the box.
However, van der Gragt became a hero when she delivered a stoppage-time equaliser.
Throughout the match, the Netherlands, who were runners-up in 2019 after a loss to the USA in the final, struggled to match Spain’s dominance for prolonged periods. Despite having moments of their own, including a near miss by Lineth Beerensteyn just seconds before Paralluelo’s decisive goal, the Dutch team ultimately fell short.
At the age of 19, Paralluelo found herself on the receiving end of a pass from Jenni Hermoso. Demonstrating remarkable composure within the penalty area, she skillfully struck the ball off the left post, thus etching her name as Spain’s youngest goal scorer in a Women’s World Cup.
Expressing her elation, Paralluelo said, “This moment holds immense significance for me; it was an unparalleled experience, a surge of euphoria… I am overflowing with happiness.”
Coach Jorge Vilda shared his thoughts on the team’s journey, stating, “Despite the match extending into extra time, the team’s unwavering belief persisted. The players exhibited an exceptional level of performance, and the game was punctuated by numerous emotionally charged decisions. Salma’s goal brought about unadulterated joy.”
Spain is now set to clash with Sweden in the upcoming semi-finals on Tuesday, following Sweden’s triumphant 2-1 victory over Japan in Auckland.
