MPs anxious about PM’s social care tax – but he’s gambling that it will win southern votes
The i says Boris Johnson has been promising to solve the social care crisis ever since he entered 10 Downing Street. In his first speech on the steps of No. 10, he went so far as to say he had a “clear plan” ready to go. But policy came there none.
Two and a bit years after becoming Prime Minister, Boris Johnson is finally prepared to reveal his plan. But the problem is that in fulfilling his promise to come up with a solution, he is going to break another promise: his manifesto commitment not to raise taxes.
On Tuesday, Johnson is expected to put to his Cabinet plans – based on the Andrew Dilnot social care recommendations – for a new cap on social care costs funded through a one per cent National Insurance hike. There is still some wrangling going on behind the scenes over the precise terms of the policy – with Health Secretary Sajid Javid reported to be pushing for a two per cent rise so as to raise more funds.
