Slovak PM no longer in life-threatening condition – deputy PM

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is currently in a stable but serious condition following a shooting incident on Wednesday, according to doctors.

Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak stated that Fico’s injuries are “complicated,” indicating the severity of the situation. The attack took place in the small town of Handlova, where Fico, 59, was reportedly gravely injured.

A suspect was apprehended at the scene of the shooting.

“During the night doctors managed to stabilise the patient’s condition,” Mr Kalinak, who is also the defence minister, said, adding: “Unfortunately the condition is still very serious as the injuries are complicated.”

Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estoka characterised the incident as a politically motivated assassination attempt.

Fico, a controversial figure domestically and within the EU, has faced criticism for his stance on military aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

Despite political divides, condemnation of the shooting has been widespread, with many denouncing it as an attack on democracy.
