Sir David Jason felt like a ‘wally’ after discussing his upcoming projects with the late Queen.

When the Only Fools and Horses actor was knighted in 2005, he got to spend time with Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace.

While chatting to the monarch he told her all about the upcoming festive special of the BBC series.

‘I felt such a wally because she said, “What are you doing at the moment?” and I said, “I’m making a Christmas special of Only Fools and ’Orses, Your Majesty”.’

Sir David, 83, felt it wasn’t the right thing to say, as he deemed it unlikely she’d have seen the series.

‘It was so East End working class, and as it fell out of my mouth I was just thinking, there’s no way on planet Earth that she would watch that sort of show,’ he told The Telegraph.

He felt inspired to share the anecdote almost twenty years later while being interviewed with Jay Blades about their upcoming series called David and Jay’s Touring Toolshed.

The pair have travelled around the country meeting crafters, hobbyists and enthusiasts for the filming.

Jay, 53, also has spent time with royals and met King Charles on a special episode of The Repair Shop and he then attended his coronation.

Sir David claims that he doesn’t follow typical protocol: ‘Jay just goes and puts his arm around him. The effrontery!’

The duo met after Only Fools and Horses superfan Jay did a jive to the theme tune on a Christmas special of Strictly Come Dancing in 2021, and Sir David sent a good luck message.

They connected after the show and became friends. ‘Real recognises real,’ said Jay.

He added: ‘We’re two working-class geezers.’

The first series doesn’t air until January 22, but they’ve already got ideas for the second.

‘You keep saying “if”. I’m up for it, you’re up for it, but we’ve got to convince the BBC,’ stated Sir David.
