Singapore GP: Norris says Verstappen still title contender

Norris: Verstappen Still a Title Contender Ahead of Singapore GP

As Formula 1 gears up for the Singapore Grand Prix, Lando Norris has firmly stated that Max Verstappen remains a “genuine” contender for the world championship. Despite the back-and-forth nature of the current season, Norris remains confident that Mclaren will not impose a team order prioritising teammate Oscar Piastri.

    Verstappen’s Recent Form

Following back-to-back victories, Verstappen has placed himself in a competitive position as he heads into the Singapore race, currently 69 points adrift of Piastri with a significant 199 points still available over the final seven rounds. Norris, who finished seventh in Azerbaijan while Piastri unfortunately crashed out, emphasised that Verstappen’s resurgence shouldn’t be overlooked.

    McLaren’s Strategy Moving Forward

Norris acknowledged Red Bull’s upgrades that have seen them match McLaren’s pace, stating: “They were challenging us for the first six or seven races… but then they brought a couple of upgrades, and that has put them on the same level.” As the McLaren team prepares for Singapore, they are hopeful of maintaining their dominant form but recognise the potential threat Verstappen poses.

    Cautious Optimism

Despite their confidence, Norris remains realistic about the challenges ahead, referencing the mixed performances in recent races. “In Baku, we had the car to win and we didn’t … If there are some races coming up where he is too fast, which is very possible, we need to focus on ourselves and maximising our performances,” he remarked.

    Title Battle Heating Up

Norris, who is 25 points behind Piastri in the championship standings, voiced his concern about the possibility of McLaren needing to favour one driver over the other. Nevertheless, he quickly dismissed the notion that team orders would dictate their strategy: “I am very concerned. I am very worried about it… No,” he asserted, underscoring the competitive spirit at McLaren.

As the team eyes potential podium finishes in Singapore to boost their constructors’ title hopes, the battle against Verstappen and Red Bull promises to be an intriguing spectacle for fans and drivers alike.
