Shane MacGowan’s funeral will be held in Tipperary on Friday.

Tipperary, in Ireland’s province of Munster, is the late Pogues singer’s home county.

MacGowan died ‘peacefully’ on Thursday, aged 65, after spending the last few months of his life in hospital, returning home shortly before his death.

It was revealed on Friday that he died after contracting pneumonia following a lengthy battle with viral encephalitis, which he was diagnosed with in 2022.

The acclaimed musician will be celebrated at a mass in Nenagh – his family’s homeplace – next week.

The mass will be open to the public.

On Friday morning, his remains will be brought through Dublin City during a procession, according to Sunday World.

The outlet adds that it’s still ‘undecided’ what will happen to MacGowan’s ashes after his private cremation.

Irish President Michael D Higgins will be at the funeral as will people from the entertainment industry.

After his death, the Irish singer and songwriter’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, 57, penned a beautiful tribute to the Irish Rover singer, calling him the ‘love of my life’.

Other tributes quickly flooded in from across the music and entertainment industries, with hundreds sharing stories and memories.

Irish singer Imelda May, The Libertines’ Carl Barat, and Carol Vorderman were among those sending their best wishes to MacGowan’s family.

Carol said: ‘Christmas in our house, as in many, starts with Fairytale of New York, The Pogues. A loss of both this year. The incredible rebels of my generation.’

Just days before his death, it was revealed that MacGowan would be allowed to spend Christmas at home after being admitted to hospital back in June.

At the time, his wife Victoria said: ‘We are deeply and eternally grateful to all of the doctors and nurses and staff at St Vincent’s – it’s the best.’
