Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has surprisingly claimed that Manchester United are still contenders for the Premier League title.
This season’s title battle looks to be one of the most open in many a year, with the top five of Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, City and Tottenham separated by just six points after 17 games.
It was largely expected that the Gunners and the Reds would challenge treble winners City for the title again, but the brilliant form of Villa and Spurs has made things even more unpredictable.
However, very few would consider United to be title challengers given their woeful form, inconsistent performances and off-pitch issues this season.
The Red Devils – who have also already been knocked out of Europe and the Carabao Cup – are seventh in the table, 11 points off leaders Arsenal and only four teams have scored fewer than their 18 goals.
Yet Aguero seems to be very wary of Erik ten Hag’s team and isn’t writing them off, telling Stake.com: ‘You can never sleep on Man United at this stage of the season.
‘They are one of the biggest threats to Man City’s Premier League title. I also think Tottenham are title contenders, who have improved a lot under Ange Postecoglou.

‘Even despite their ups and downs, Newcastle are also in with a chance of the title as they always put up a fight.’
The Magpies are seventh, a point ahead of United, but their title chances look slim thanks to an extensive injury list.
Though United’s season has been very disappointing so far, there have been a few fantastic moments, the best probably being Alejandro Garnacho’s overhead kick against Everton which drew comparisons to Wayne Rooney’s legendary bicycle kick vs City.

‘Wheeeew, what a goal! That has to be the best goal of 2023,’ former striker Aguero said of Garnacho’s strike.
‘When I saw it, I was awestruck. It’s not easy to score a goal like that.
‘Garnacho’s goal and Rooney’s goal against City are both great goals. For the physical prowess behind them, and the sheer beauty of the goal. But I choose Garnacho’s for one major reason: Rooney scored against City!’
