Sega classic revivals will be edgy and ‘rebellious’ – hints at new Virtua Fighter

The new Jet Set Radio game will see the involvement of the original creators, as Sega looks to its early 90s marketing for inspiration.

One of the most exciting announcements from The Game Awards on Friday was the news that Sega is finally going to start reviving some of its classic franchises, including Jet Set Radio, Streets Of Rage, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi.

The reveal only showed a few seconds of each game, and with the 3D titles it wasn’t clear if they were remakes or not, and that still hasn’t been confirmed. But Sega has talked about how they ‘really want to show edginess and a rebellious mind-set’ with the games.

Sega co-chief operating officer and Sega of America CEO Shuji Utsumi wants to recall the glory days of the Mega Drive, when Sega was seen as the ‘alternative’ games console, compared to Nintendo, but it’s still not clear that that means for the games themselves.

The marketing for Sega games and consoles in the 90s was certainly edgy but that wasn’t necessarily true of the games themselves, especially most of Sega’s own first party titles.

Even Jet Set Radio, a game about a street gang of graffiti artists confounding the police, was goofy rather than anarchic. So it’s not entirely clearly what Utsumi is getting at.

Unfortunately, his comments to The Washington Post were extremely brief, so there’s not much more to go on. Although he did add that the size of the global games industry is only now large enough to support revivals of older franchises.

‘The concept of games like Jet Set Radio is advanced. The original creators are involved again, and its time is now,’ said Utsumi. ‘It’s a good time where people can appreciate all kinds of concepts.’

This is the first indication that, for Jet Set Radio at least, Sega is making the game themselves and not just licensing the work out to other developers, as it did to with the likes of Streets Of Rage 4. Although since he goes into no further detail the original creators may simply be advisors.

Utsumi did, however, strongly hint that fighting game Virtua Fighter would be amongst some of the other games making a comeback.

‘We are evaluating right now. Virtua Fighter doesn’t use so many tricks, special moves like in Street Fighter, it’s very realistic,’ he said. ‘How can we make it more dramatic? It’s something we’re working on.’

There’s no time frame for the release of any of the games announced so far, with the implication that it’s going to be quite a while before any of them will be out.
