Sea Of Thieves – is it about to go multiformat? (Picture: Microsoft)
Yet another source has suggested that existing Xbox exclusives are going multiformat and that MMO Sea Of Thieves will be amongst them.
The idea that Xbox exclusives could appear on other formats is not necessarily a new one, but it’s always been assumed that, if it did happen, it would be via Game Pass. If the current rumours are to be believed though the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch will be receiving native versions of big name, first party titles… including Sea Of Thieves.
Earlier this week, three separate sources all suggested that at least one former Xbox exclusive would be coming to Switch this year, with rumours pointing towards Bethesda title Hi-Fi Rush.
Now an additional source has added their weight to the rumours, suggesting that Rare’s online pirate game Sea Of Thieves is on the way to both rival formats.
At least one of the previous sources suggested that multiple games would be going multiformat and regular rumourmonger Jeff Grubb suggests that one of them is Sea Of Thieves.
Since Hi-Fi Rush has not been announced officially it may be that Sea Of Thieves will actually be the first, which would make sense, since it’s a live service title that’s not quite like anything else on other formats.
‘I’ll say I’ve heard that is one that might be coming to other platforms. When I first started hearing these rumours, I was like, ‘Oh this is probably about Sea Of Thieves, because I’ve heard that could come to Switch and PlayStation,’’ said Grubb in his latest video.
‘And maybe that might be the kind of thing where, actually all of this stuff is happening, and Microsoft is kind of trying to rejigger its strategy.’
Grubb seems to be reacting to the initial rumours rather than being part of them, so it’s not entirely clear how up to date his information is, but if Sea Of Thieves really is coming to both PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch that would be a significant move from Microsoft.

Many considered Microsoft’s rhetoric about bringing Call Of Duty to as many formats as possible as just a PR line, to ensure the acquisition, but it’s beginning to sound like they have taken that concept to its logical conclusion.
Whether we’ll ever be in a position where Halo is on PlayStation 5 and Switch remains to be seen but it makes rumours of an Xbox showcase event later in the month all the more enticing.
