Rylan Clark began 2024 with a tongue-in-cheek apology for coming out of musical retirement and singing a duet with Rick Astley during the BBC’s New Year’s Eve celebration.
The TV presenter, 35, who first found fame back in 2012 on The X Factor, gave a full-throated rendition of You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by British pop band Dead or Alive with chart-topper Rick, 57.
In what was a bit of a banner year for Rick, who also performed at Glastonbury, he was given his own special – Rick Astley Rocks New Year’s Eve – which was filmed at the iconic Camden Roundhouse in London and saw him joined by special guests, including Rylan and Sharleen Spiteri.
Moments after Rick and BBC Radio 2 DJ Rylan’s song was aired after the new year had been rung in, Rylan took to X and posted: ‘It can’t get worse than me singing you into the new year. 2024 is on the up from here.’
‘Happy new year x,’ he added.
However, it appeared fans had no time for his modesty, lavishing This Morning host Rylan, who will be hosting a saucy new dating show in 2024, with praise for such an enthusiastic performance.

‘That was awesome,’ replied Kelly Hiscock, while Charlie Agnew added: ‘Can’t get any better, my year has peaked and we’re only half an hour into day one.’
‘You were fabulous, loved the sparkly string vest, Happy New Year. You’ve been rickrolled and spun right round,’ joked Ellen Doolan.
‘Rylan you were bloody amazing. Stop putting yourself down as you have a great voice,’ insisted Fiona Brown. ‘I really enjoyed spending my new year’s eve with you and @rickastley.’
User @Joshlovesit87 agreed,’ tweeting alongside a whole host of emoji: ‘Rick Astley and Rylan singing “You Spin Me Round” was bloody fabulous.’
The congratulations for Rylan and Rick continued over on Instagram, where the official BBC iPlayer account shared a clip of their duet, including the choreography the pair slipped into.
‘Let’s make this number one – this was mega last night,’ Rebecca Johnson-Honey enthused, while Becky Cassie responded: ‘Who knew we needed this in our lives. I loved it. Love Rylan.’

‘Who knew Rylan could sing like that!! Brilliant,’ added Jo Howel, alongside a smiley face.
Revellers braved torrential rain in Newcastle and Liverpool to welcome in 2024 in true British style, while New Year’s Eve celebrations were cancelled in Plymouth and throughout Devon and Cornwall as gale force winds of up to 75mph battered the region.
