The i says a 79-year-old Ukrainian great-grandmother has been pictured clutching an AK-47 as she joined thousands of ordinary Ukrainians training to shoot and said she is ready to “defend my home” in case of a Russian invasion.
Valentyna Konstantynovska was seen holding the assault rifle during basic combat training organised by forces from Ukraine’s National Guard, in Mariupol, in the Donetsk region on Sunday, amid fears from Western leaders that a Russian invasion could take place within 48 hours.
“I am ready to shoot. If something happens I will defend my home, my city, my children,” she told cameras. “I will do this because I think I’m ready for it. I don’t want to lose my country, my city.”
