Royal Family stopped Meghan Markle saying very particular word on Suits, claims creator Aaron Korsh

The creator of Suits has opened up about working with Meghan Markle, claiming that members of the Royal Family put their foot down over some scenes.

The actress became a household name thanks to her role as Rachel Zane in the legal drama, which also starred Patrick J Adams, Gabriel Macht, Gina Torres, Rick Hoffman and Wendell Pierce.

However, it attracted an even bigger audience when the 42-year-old started dating Prince Harry – who she married in 2018 – and she left at the end of season seven.

The program eventually ended with season nine in 2019, but the episodes arrived on Netflix in the US over the summer, with many viewers now calling out for a reboot.

Speaking in a new interview, creator and writer Aaron Korsh reflected on the popularity of the series, and the heightened attention and security that came with having the Duchess of Sussex in the cast after her relationship with Harry was made public.

Touching on changes they were asked to make behind the scenes, he told the Hollywood Reporter: ‘I will say, and I think Harry put this in the book, because I heard people talking about it – [the Royal Family] weighed in on some stuff. Not many things, by the way, but a few things that we wanted to do and couldn’t do, and it was a little irritating.’

The producer explained that, in one particular scene, he had written for Rachel to describe something as ‘poppycock’, which was a running joke with his family in real life.

‘In the episode, Mike and Rachel were going to have a thing, and as a nod to my in-laws, we were going to have her say, “My family would say poppycock.” And the Royal Family did not want her saying the word. They didn’t want to put the word “poppycock” in her mouth,’ he continued.

‘I presume because they didn’t want people cutting things together of her saying “c**k.” So, we had to change it to “bulls**t” instead of “poppycock,” and I did not like it because I’d told my in-laws that [poppycock] was going to be in the show.’

Aaron insisted that he wasn’t sure how the Royals managed to get their hands on the script, but he was aware that they were reading them through feedback that was given to him.

Explaining that it wasn’t Meghan who put the request in, he recalled: ‘Whoever it was, they didn’t like having to tell me any more than I liked having to hear it.

‘But listen, when they explained it that way, and I’m pretty sure it got explained to me that it was about that [splicing potential], I had some sympathy because I wouldn’t want somebody doing that to her either. And the thing is, I didn’t think anybody really would, but also I don’t know. People are crazy.’

Suits arrived on Netflix in the US on June 17, and has remained in the top 10 list of programs on the streaming platform ever since.

Given the new success, questions have unsurprisingly been asked on whether we could see the Pearson Hardman gang back on our screens in a reboot.

Executive producer Gene Klein previously told TV Line: ‘I’ve mentioned to Aaron, in this era of reboots and reunions and all this other stuff, that I’m expecting a call at some point. But I’m not aware of any serious conversations.

‘It’s just one of those things where, in this day and age, you wouldn’t be surprised if somebody called you someday. But so far, nothing that I’m aware of.’

Discussing the possibility of a Meghan return, he added: ‘I would assume that’s just not possible.’

Suits is available to stream on Netflix now.
