Jamie Carragher admits he ‘feels sorry’ for Manchester United star Rasmus Hojlund with the striker still waiting for his first Premier League goal.
United brought the 20-year-old to Old Trafford from Atalanta in a £72million deal during the summer transfer window, tasked with leading United’s attack with Anthony Martial the only other senior centre forward at the club.
Hojlund scored five times in the Champions League group stages but is yet to get off the mark in the league. He was given a golden opportunity to do just that at Anfield, fed through by Scott McTominay on Sunday afternoon only to fire straight at Alisson in the Liverpool goal.
After a goalless draw at Anfield, former United captain Roy Keane criticised the Denmark international for passing up ‘a big moment’ to find the back of the net.
‘When you play big money for a striker, these are the chances you have to take,’ Keane said.
‘You are not going to get many. It’s nice link up play by United but he has to score. It’s a big moment.’
Hojlund scored nine times in 32 appearances for Atalanta last season. He spent just one year at the Italian side before United came calling having joining from Sturm Graz in the summer of 2022.

He scored 12 goals in 21 games in his half season at the Austrian club having joined from Copenhagen in January 2022.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher was sympathetic when discussing the Dane’s struggles, believing the move to Manchester may have come too early.
‘I feel a bit sorry for him in that it feels like this move has come a little bit too early for him,’ Carragher said.

‘He was signed from Atalanta in the summer, it feels as though there should be a club here [below United] and then United.
‘I feel for him, he doesn’t get much service at all. I feel for him. We say you need time but when you are at the top clubs you don’t get that long.
‘He has scored in the Champions League but I just hope this move hasn’t come too early in his career.’
