It was all love between Ronnie O’Sullivan and Luca Brecel after their incredible World Championship quarter-final, which the Belgian spectacularly won 13-10.
The Rocket was in a great position going into Wednesday’s final session, leading 10-6, but things went downhill fast for the reigning champion.
The Bullet won seven frames on the spin, knocking in breaks of 112, 64, 72, 61, 78 and 63 along the way, causing a major upset against the seven-time world champion.
The pair shared some nice words after the match, with O’Sullivan gracious in defeat to the 28-year-old.
Asked what the Rocket said to him, Brecel said: ‘Many things. Great player, great to watch, I hope you win it, it’ll be good for the game. Things like this, it’s good.’
O’Sullivan was asked the same question, saying: ‘I said good luck, you’re an amazing talent, unbelievable. I said, just go and try and win it now, I wished him all the best.’
Brecel has been open about his relaxed approach to this tournament, not practicing much and going out partying in between matches.
The world number one appreciates it, pleased to see an attacking, fluent talent that brings some character to the game.
‘He’s good, he’s a good lad, I like him. It’s nice, he’s got a great attitude towards the game, it doesn’t dictate him,’ said O’Sullivan.
‘He turns up, plays, loves it, enjoys it, enjoys his life. It just shows you don’t need to be how most people think you need to be to be a successful sportsman. You can be relaxed and still play wonderful sport, it’s great to see.
‘Even if he doesn’t win it, it’s still great to have him in the game. You get some people in sport that might not win as much but people tune in to watch them.
‘It’s great to have him in the game, snooker’s lucky.’
