The NFL world was rocked today with the shocking revelation that Patriots owner Robert Kraft may have played a role in the Falcons’ decision not to hire Bill Belichick as their head coach last January. ESPN reported that Kraft allegedly called Falcons owner Arthur Blank to warn him not to trust Belichick after the interview process.
Blank, who considers Kraft his closest friend in ownership circles, reportedly spoke to Kraft at least twice over the phone after interviewing Belichick. The Patriots had recently parted ways with Belichick after a 24-year partnership, leaving him without a job during the 2024 head-coaching hiring cycle.
Patriots vice president of communications Stacey James denied ESPN’s report, stating that Kraft advocated for Belichick to get the job and never questioned his character or trust. However, sources close to Kraft told ESPN that he found Belichick to be difficult, obstinate, stubborn, and arrogant, leading to feelings of betrayal by the former head coach.
The report also mentioned that had Blank hired Belichick, he would have offset the reported $25 million annual salary owed to Belichick by the Krafts this year. Belichick’s contract with the Patriots reportedly ran through 2024.
The drama surrounding the Patriots, Belichick, and Kraft continues to unfold, leaving fans and analysts alike stunned by the behind-the-scenes turmoil in the NFL. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
