Sunday Papers: Rishi vows to scrap EU laws & Europe burns

Two stories dominate this week’s Sunday Papers: the extreme temperatures hitting Britain and the latest in the Conservative party leader race – as next week will see candidates eliminated until there are just two in the race to become PM.

A quick round-up of some of the major stories from the week

This week’s papers are being dominated by scrutiny being aimed at Conservative leadership hopeful Penny Mordaunt but supporters of her main rival Liz Truss.

“Knives out for Penny!” – that’s how the Daily Express splashes on the new – after Ms Mordaunt again performed well in the second round of the contest.

The paper says there’s now a “determined bid” among Mordaunt’s critics to “wreck” her hopes of becoming PM.

Prince Andrew interview – the movie!

“Andrew drama heads to the big screen” is The Times’ headline as it describes how the story of Prince Andrew’s infamous BBC grilling will be turned into a movie.

The Telegraph suggests Hugh Grant is in the frame to play the Queen’s son – though the actor has denied this.

    Sunday Mirror – Boris Heatwave

The Sunday Mirror combines politics and weather with its headline “Boris’ heat rave”.

The outgoing prime minister’s no-show at the latest COBRA –  meeting apparently in favour of a party – has been christened “Boris’ Heatrave” by the paper.

They report that the PM is hosting a farewell party at Chequers tomorrow, and missed an emergency meeting about the hot weather.

Mail on Sunday – Does leak show Penny did back gender self-ID?

A leaked document suggests Penny Mordaunt backed moves to allow gender self-identification, the Mail on Sunday reports.

It comes as her rivals accuse her of being evasive on her views on trans rights.

The paper features an image of Boris Johnson on a visit to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

Sunday People – Penny’s cash from climate sceptics

The Sunday People leads on a claim about Penny Mordaunt supposedly receiving money from climate change sceptics.

Sunday Times – Mordaunt’s gender claims undermined by leaked papers

The Sunday Times reports that leaked documents prompt fresh scrutiny of Tory leadership contender Penny Mordaunt’s claims that she has never supported gender self-identification.

The paper also looks ahead to predicted record-breaking temperatures. It is expected the county could see temps of 40C next week – and a red alert has been issued for Monday and Tuesday.

Rishi vows to scrap EU laws & Europe burns

Sunday Telegraph – Sunak vows to ditch EU laws holding Britain back

The Sunday Telegraph leads on Rishi Sunak’s pledge to scrap EU laws that he says are “getting in the way” of British businesses.

The paper also features an interview with one of Sunak’s rivals Liz Truss.

Daily Express – Rishi: I’ll scrap EU red tape in the first 100 days

Coming off his appearance in the first TV debate, Rishi Sunak has vowed to scrap EU red tape in his first 100 days as prime minister, the Daily Express says.

The front page features an image of Boris Johnson and claims he’s still prevalent in the polls.

Daily Star – 41C temps … Summer lovin’

The idea of record-breaking heat has got people in the mood, and a baby boom is coming – according to the Daily Star.

The more optimistic take on tomorrow’s extreme heat see the headline “Summer Lovin” – the paper reports on experts’ claims couples will have more sex in the heat.

Rishi vows to scrap EU laws & Europe burns

The Observer – As Europe burns, climate chief warns: I may quit if new PM dumps net zero plan

“As Europe burns, climate chief warns: I may quit if new PM dumps net zero plan”, the Observer’s headline reads.

Alok Sharma, the cabinet minister who led last year’s landmark Cop26 UN climate summit, tells The Observer he may resign if the new prime minister dumps the Government’s plan for net zero.
