Rishi Sunak becomes new UK PM
Rishi Sunak is officially the new leader of the Conservative Party and will go see King Charles III where he will ask to form a government – Rishi Sunak will then become the prime minister following his meeting with the King.
Rishi Sunak has become the UK’s latest Conservative Party leader and is set to be PM after being the only candidate to pass the 100 Tory MPs mark.
Rishi Sunak is the UK’s first British Asian prime minister. It’s just seven weeks after he lost out to Liz Truss in the summer leadership race – with Liz Truss only winning by a small margin.
But following Liz Truss’s disastrous 44 days in power (before announcing her resignation) a new contest was announced on Friday.
He is the UK’s first British Asian prime minister and will take office as the UK faces enormous economic challenges.
The leadership contest only had one round as Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the race, clearly not hitting the 100 mark despite her camp saying she had crossed the line.
Rishi Sunak new Tory leader and PM amid economic turmoil and political chaos
The new prime minister is taking over at an extremely difficult time for the economy.
He will need to announce some detailed plans and address the public – who haven’t heard from him since the summer.
Many will need the new PM to provide clarity about how he intends to balance the books as well as a potential early general election.
Many felt that Sunak was the most capable person to take over from Liz Truss as he was a very successful chancellor during the pandemic and everything that happened with Liz Truss’s mini-budget, he had warned about during the summer leadership race.
Rishi Sunak has made history by becoming the first non-white PM. And he’s inheriting a country in economic turmoil and political chaos.
