Resident Evil Village Shadows Of Rose – when do you think Capcom will announce the next mainline game? (Picture: Capcom)
Capcom’s future plans for Resident Evil remain a mystery, but one rumour points to the next mainline entry being its biggest one yet.
While the launch and success of the Resident Evil 4 remake has fans preoccupied with thoughts of Capcom revisiting Resident Evil 5, it seems more likely that the next project for the series is a new sequel, i.e. Resident Evil 9.
Resident Evil Village was two years ago and its Shadows Of Rose expansion did little to tease where the series could go next, although it did appear to wrap up the Winters’ family storyline that began in Resident Evil 7.
As such, it’s difficult to tell what Capcom has in store with Resident Evil 9, although a new rumour claims that it not only has the largest budget of any Resident Evil game but that it’ll have the longest development time too.
This comes courtesy of horror game leaker Dusk Golem, who in the past has shared accurate Silent Hill leaks and hinted at WayForward’s enhanced re-release of Clock Tower.
They haven’t shared specific figures for Resident Evil 9’s budget but saying it’s bigger than previous entries suggests Capcom is going all out this time, which makes sense given the success of the last few games.
With game development growing more costly every year, it’s not too surprising to see this effect Resident Evil as well. Although how this will reflect on the sequel’s scope and scale remains to be seen.

Dusk Golem also reiterates a previous claim that Resident Evil 9 will be out in 2025, which seems reasonable, especially given they claim that development began in 2018.
For context, that’s only a year after Resident Evil 7, meaning work was also going on alongside the development of Resident Evil Village. Juggling multiple projects at once isn’t unheard of in game development but, if accurate, then that also points to Capcom having lofty expectations for Resident Evil 9.

Dusk Golem also suggests that Resident Evil 9 will serve as a ‘closing chapter’ for the current arc of the series, which makes sense since that’ll make for a neat little trilogy of games, starting with Resident Evil 7.
This rumour was posted in a private Discord and later shared to Reddit, although for some reason the original Reddit post has since been deleted. Thankfully, Wccftech saved screenshots for posterity’s sake.
