The Independent – Reeves tries to lift Labour gloom with pledge on austerity

    September 23, 2024

The Independent says Rachel Reeves will attempt to lift the gloom that has settled over Labour’s conference in Liverpool with a pledge that there will be “no return to austerity”. In a bid to offer some hope, she will say: “My optimism for Britain burns as bright as it ever has done. My ambition for Britain knows no limits because I can see the prize on offer if we make the right choices now.”

Reeves tries to lift Labour gloom by pledging ‘No return to austerity’

Rachel Reeves will attempt to lift the gloom that has settled over Labour’s conference in Liverpool with a pledge that there will be “no return to austerity”.

In a bid to offer some hope, she will say: “My optimism for Britain burns as bright as it ever has done. My ambition for Britain knows no limits, because I can see the prize on offer if we make the right choices now.”

But the message threatens to come across as jarring amid growing concerns among Labour activists about government cuts and tax rises in her Budget next month.

The chancellor will attempt to reset the narrative by insisting that she is “optimistic” for Britain.

It comes as the Labour leadership has faced a tirade of criticism over Sir Keir Starmer and other senior ministers receiving thousands of pounds’ worth of gifts and freebies.

The Independent Climate 100 List 2024

The climate crisis is the defining issue of our age. By now, dealing with it should be at the top of every country’s priority list. In this time of great unrest around the world, it may feel counterintuitive for it to take precedence, but, to put it bluntly, if we don’t act now nothing else will exist.

As Greta Thunberg so accurately and succinctly puts it, it’s an existential emergency. Last year was the hottest on record, with temperatures soaring to 34.8C in the UK. Wildfires have been sweeping through Europe, hurricanes are becoming more frequent out of season, and crops are being ravaged by both floods and droughts, pushing ecosystems to the brink.

Aside from the terrifying impacts we can see and feel, there are those not visible but very much present, including the disparity between rich and poor nations. The latter bear a disproportionately large part of the physical and financial burden of the climate crisis, but have contributed the least to it. Island nations, smaller countries and coastal areas are at risk of being totally submerged. Entire cultures could be lost along with land, and whole populations are at risk of displacement. We are nearing tipping points at which the drastic effects of the climate crisis caused by humans will become irreversible.

‘No More Austerity!’ Chancellor’s party conference speech - Paper Talk

    Editorial 23 September 2024.

“No More Austerity!” – Monday’s newspaper front pages are heavily dominated by the chancellor’s party conference speech later today. Rachel Reeves will lay out the plans to get Britain’s economy back on track with a speech that is set to offer a positive version of the future after dire warnings about the economy since they came to power.

The Labour Party conference is taking place in Liverpool and marks the first annual conference in government for 15 years.

Beyond politics, there is continued coverage of the allegations about former Harrods owner Mohammed Al-Fayed.
