The Korean age ratings website has published a new listing for Red Dead Redemption, implying a remaster for consoles is on the horizon.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is undoubtedly Rockstar’s main priority at the moment, but that hasn’t stopped rumours of the studio juggling other projects, such as a remake or remaster of the original Red Dead Redemption.
Fan suspicions were heightened last year when Red Dead Redemption was randomly removed from PlayStation Plus, with zero explanation. The theory being that making the original unavailable will force people to purchase a fancy new re-release, which is exactly what Rockstar did with the GTA Trilogy.
Now there seems to be more concrete evidence of a Red Dead Redemption re-release’s existence, as the game has been listed on the Korean age ratings website.
The Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea – a regular source of advanced info on games – published an age rating for Red Dead Redemption earlier this month, following an application by Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two.
While the listing doesn’t state whether it’s a remake, remaster, or a simple port, its presence does strongly suggest that the game is being re-released in some form later this year.
The safest assumption is that it’s for modern consoles – the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S – as well as PC. After all, the original Red Dead Redemption was only ever launched for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and given that a straight port would not look impressive nowadays.
Gematsu notes that the game’s classification number – CC-NV-230615-001 – means it must be for consoles, as Korean game ratings use NV to refer to console titles and NP for PC titles.
However, this doesn’t necessarily rule out a PC port from happening. It just means whatever this Red Dead Redemption re-release is, it’s at least coming to consoles.
It’s also important to note that ratings for the original game on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 already exist on the same website, having been published in 2010. So, it’s not as if Korea’s only just getting Red Dead Redemption and people are mistaking it for a brand-new release.
The listing doesn’t mention any sort of launch date but if past experience is anything to go by, its publication this month likely means a formal announcement isn’t far off.
