Champions League: Real Madrid sneak past Leipzig to book quarter-finals spot
Real Madrid 1-1 RB Leipzig (2-1 agg)
Real Madrid have secured their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals thanks to Vinicius Junior, who scored in the 65th minute. But it wasn’t plain sailing as RB Leipzig equalised two minutes later.
Vinicius clipped in football superstar Jude Bellingham’s pass to take the lead but Leipzig’s skipper Willi Orban was able to find the back of the net, with a header.
The goal gave many fans the belief that they could go on to win as they opened up the Spanish league leaders in their hunt for a second goal, an equaliser (agg 1-0), but much like the first leg, the German side wasted many great opportunities.
Real, aiming to become European champions for a record-extending 15th time, managed to hold onto the slim lead and reach the quarter-finals for the 12th time in the past 14 seasons.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side will find out their quarter-final opponents when the last eight draw is on Friday, 15 March (11:00 GMT).
