Keir Starmer is accused of piling pressure on police with threat to quit if he’s fined over Beergate
The Daily Mail accuses Sir Keir of putting pressure on detectives who now know that their decisions could decapitate the official opposition.
Daily Mail says Keir Starmer was accused of putting ‘deeply inappropriate’ pressure on Beergate police last night.
In a high-stakes gamble, the Labour leader said he would ‘do the right thing and step down’ if Durham Constabulary fined him over his lockdown beer with aides.
But his opponents said this had placed detectives in the difficult position of knowing their decisions could decapitate the official opposition and leave Labour looking for new leadership.
Sir Keir’s deputy, Angela Rayner, also said she would quit if she was fined over her role in the ‘Beergate’ event in Durham on April 30 last year when all indoor socialising was banned.
After a day of crisis meetings with advisers, Sir Keir gave a brief statement yesterday in which he repeatedly stated that ‘no laws were broken’ and claimed that the allegations against him were politically motivated.
However, the former director of public prosecutions confirmed he would quit if sanctioned over the event, saying: ‘If the police decide to issue me with a fixed penalty notice I would of course do the right thing and step down.’

Keir Starmer’s pledge to resign could force police to drop party probe
The Sun describes the Labour leader’s announcement as a desperate and outrageous attempt to strong-arm police into clearing him.
The Sun says LABOUR leader Sir Keir Starmer yesterday vowed to quit if fined for Currygate — leaving his fate in Durham police’s hands.
Cornered Sir Keir was forced to say he would step down after calling for Boris Johnson to resign simply for being investigated by the cops.
But allies boasted it could see police not take action for fear of being seen to oust the Opposition chief.
Government minister Chris Philp suggested Sir Keir could be “attempting to pressure the police into clearing him” and called the move “deeply inappropriate”.
After days of trying to play down his lockdown beer and curry night, Sir Keir took the high stakes gamble to try and save his job.
