Queen’s death: Day-to-day guide – Tuesday’s key events
The death of our beloved Monarch has brought thousands out onto the streets to pay their respects. All around the world, as tributes pour in, all eyes are on the UK as preparations for the Queen’s funeral are underway and the world is introduced to King Charles III.
Here’s our guide to the week’s key events up to and including the plans for the Queen’s state funeral on 19 Monday, all you need to know about viewing the Queen’s coffin as she is lying in state and what to expect if you’re travelling to London for the funeral.
The key events for Tuesday 13 September
- 17:00: The coffin will be moved from St Giles’ Cathedral to Edinburgh airport, accompanied by the Princess Royal
- 18:00: The coffin will travel by plane to RAF Northolt
- 19:00: The coffin will land in London
- The coffin will then travel to Buckingham Palace where it will be met by King Charles, Camilla and other members of the royal family
- Earlier in the day, King Charles III and Camilla will visit Northern Ireland before returning to London
Queen’s death – Tuesday’s events in full
Queen Elizabeth’s coffin will be moved from St Giles’ Cathedral to Edinburgh airport and flown by plane to RAF Northolt. The Queen’s only daughter, Princess Anne will accompany her mother’s coffin.
The coffin is expected to arrive in London just before 19:00 and will then travel to Buckingham Palace, where King Charles III and his wife Camilla will meet the coffin.
The route from St Giles’ Cathedral by road to Edinburgh Airport, is yet to be announced but members of the public will be able to view the coffin as it makes its way.
During the day, King Charles and Camilla will visit Belfast where the King will meet the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris MP, as well as other party leaders. After a meeting with religious leaders, King Charles and Camilla will attend a prayer service at St Anne’s Cathedral, before returning the London.
