Netflix released the final six ever episodes of The Crown last week, with the popular series concluding with King Charles and Queen Camilla’s wedding in April 2005. The final episode centres on the late Queen Elizabeth II, showing her planning her own funeral arrangements and deliberating over whether she should step down as monarch due to her old age (she was 78 at the time).
Imelda Staunton, who plays the Queen in the final two seasons, is seen conflicted with her younger selves, played by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman over whether she should stay as head of state or hand the reins over to her son and heir, Charles.
However, such a portrayal of the Queen is wholly inaccurate and to suggest that she ever thought about throwing in the towel is wrong, and pretty insulting.
Elizabeth would never have thought about abdicating as she believed it was her divine right to be monarch.

She strongly believed in the divine right of kings – a religious doctrine that her right to rule came directly from the will of God.
As a deeply religious person, the Queen believed that she was on the throne due to God’s will and it was not up to her to decide if she could quit – to do so would be going against God.
Her unwavering faith, and position as head of the Church of England, is why she was so dedicated to a life of service and never faltered in her commitment to get the job done.
This is why she carried out constitutional duty of appointing Liz Truss as the new UK prime minister on September 6, 2022 – just two days before her death.
Right until the end the Queen would read through her daily red box from the Government to ensure she kept abreast of government business and other briefings.
It is wrong and wholly inaccurate for The Crown to suggest that the Queen ever considered stepping down – as she didn’t contemplate it for one second, not even in her 97th year.
