Someone has provided the first real in-depth look at the PS5 Slim, revealing a couple of new details ahead of its November launch.
Even though the new PlayStation 5 model, referred to by fans as the PS5 Slim, isn’t out yet, some people have managed to get their hands on one to show off online.
New photos comparing it to the original model were leaked last week and now YouTuber Dave2D has uploaded a proper teardown video, offering a deeper look at what the new slimmer model offers.
Although it’s clearly thinner than its chunkier sibling, Dave2D reveals that it isn’t that much smaller than the original PlayStation 5, adding that the height difference is even less noticeable if you’ve attached the unofficial DBrand face plates.
He doesn’t provide any specific measurements, although he did weigh both models with and without the disc drives for comparison’s sake.
Whereas the original PlayStation 5 weighs 3.4 kg (without disc drive) and 3.9 kg (with disc drive), the PS5 Slim weighs 2.6 kg (without disc drive) and 3.2 kg (with disc drive), making it substantially lighter.
The video also reveals that the disc drive for the physical edition console can be removed if you so wish and doing so is surprisingly easy. It doesn’t even require a screwdriver, confirming it’ll be possible to replace the disc drive, since Sony will be selling those separately.
As is evident from just looking at it, the slim model features a quad panel system, but it turns out that only the top two panels sport a new glossy finish.
The bottom two have a matte finish similar to the original PlayStation 5, making the whole thing look ‘a little cheaper’ and less appealing than previous slim PlayStation models, according to Dave2D.

He also criticises the new horizontal stand that comes with the slim model. Rather than a circular plate like the vertical stand for the original PlayStation 5, the horizontal stand is just two plastic clips that you slot into the line dividing the panels.
A vertical stand for the PS5 Slim will be sold separately for £24.99, but Dave2D thinks the new model is sturdy enough to stand upright without it, at least with the disc drive attached.
As a reminder, the PS5 Slim will cost exactly the same as the original model but comes with 1TB of storage space. It doesn’t have an official launch date yet but it’s been claimed it’ll arrive this Friday on November 10, at least in the US.
