PS Plus yearly subs suffer price hike – cheapest is now £60 a year

Sony has justified its sudden price hike on certain PS Plus subscriptions, saying it’ll allow them to keep adding ‘value-added benefits.’

We already know what September’s PS Plus games are going to be, with Saints Row the headliner, but Sony does have another surprise in store for next month: a price increase.

The price hike affects 12 month subscriptions for all three tiers – Essential, Extra, and Premium – but not shorter subscriptions.

As of September 6 (the same day Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3 launch, curiously enough), 12 months of Essential will cost £59.99, 12 months of Extra will cost £99.99, and 12 months of Premium will cost £119.99.

So, for Essential subscribers, that’s an extra £10 a year they’ll need to fork over. For Extra subscribers, it’s an additional £16, and then an extra £20 for Premium subscribers.

Sony does stress that this won’t come into effect for current subscribers until their next renewal date, after November 6. However, the PlayStation Blog adds: ‘Any membership changes you make on or after September 6, such as upgrades, downgrades or buying additional time, will update your plan reflecting the new prices.’

As for why this happening in the first place, all Sony says is, ‘This price adjustment will enable us to continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.’

You’d think Sony would sweeten the deal by at least offering a really solid line-up of free games to download but its headliner for September is the awful, and already widely discounted, Saints Row reboot.

The only other two games are fantasy MMO Black Desert for the PlayStation 4 and first person open world adventure Generation Zero, which also aren’t much to get excited about.

Perhaps the PS Plus Extra exclusive additions will be more interesting, like August’s line-up, but this seems a bad time to promote such unexciting games.
