Premier League roundup: Antony makes debut impact, Brighton seven-goal thriller

    Premier League roundup

Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal  – Man Utd’s new star Antony helps end Arsenal’s run

Manchester United’s new star Antony scored a goal on his debut against Arsenal, with Marcus Rashford also scoring (twice) giving United the win over the Gunners – ending Arsenal’s winning run to the season.

The £82 million Brazilian scored 10 minutes before half-time in the end-to-end duel between the two clubs.

Rashford claimed the assist for that goal and then Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka levelled it up on the hour.

Rashford then scored twice – his first Premier League double since December 2020, helping lift the Red Devils to the fifth spot on the league table.

It’s Arsenal’s first loss of this new PL campaign, but they remain top of the table. Manager Mikel Arteta will undoubtedly be concerned about how easy it was for Man Utd to split open the Gunners.

“The game was there for the taking,” Arteta said. “We haven’t won it because we lacked some discipline in some moments and we weren’t ruthless enough in front of goal.

“If we play with more courage we win the game. It is a big lesson – if you want to win here you have to do everything so right.”

Brighton 5-2 Leicester – thrilling game, stunning strike ruled out by VAR

Sunday’s Brighton vs Leicester was the game of the weekend, a seven-goal thriller that had football fans on the edge of their seats.

Leicester, bottom of the Premier League, looked promising with their early goal just 51 seconds into the match.

But the lead lasted only eight minutes, as Solly March’s header deflected into the net off Leicester defender Luke Thomas.

Brighton went ahead in the 15th minute, after a loose pass from James Maddison, gave Moises Caicedo the chance for a goal – which he took in style after being set up by Enock Mwepu.

The frantic first half saw Leicester score a second time at the 32nd minute.

A spectacular strike, 30 yards out, from Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister looked to give them the lead again – but VAR ruled it out for offside.

Leandro Trossard scored Brighton’s third from a Pascal Gross’ pass, and Trossard then won a penalty – which Mac Allister converted for the fourth goal.

And finally, Mac Allister curled in a 25-yard free kick in injury time to grab his second goal and Brighton’s fifth.

It’s an excellent start for Brighton’s new Premier League season – they are fourth in the league, whilst Leicester have just one point from six matches and are three points adrift at the bottom of the table.
