PMQs – PM says more sanctions to come
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said there are more sanctions to come, including a full package of sanctions if Vladimir Putin were to invade Ukraine.
The PM says the UK has offered military support to Ukraine and the package of sanctions already set out is extensive – he says 275 people have been sanctioned already and “there is more to come.”
………………………..
Keir Starmer fears the PM’s strategy could “send the wrong message” – and MPs have concerns as well.
Starmer wants the PM to bring forward the full package of sanctions – including banning it from using SWIFT – an international payment system. The leader of the opposition says the PM will have the full support the House of Commons.
The PM says the UK is ready to escalate sanctions when needed and says the current measures allow the UK to target Russian individuals.
………………………..
The Labour leader says it’s “time to act” because Russia has already invaded and again he urges the PM to bring in tougher sanctions.
The PM says the government will bring in measures that will stop all Russian banks and individuals “raising money on London’s markets.” He says the government will “peel back the facade of beneficial ownership of property in the UK and companies” which the PM says has “gone on for far too long.”
