Pep Guardiola plans to leave Manchester City in two years when deal expires

Pep Guardiola plans to leave Manchester City in two years when deal expires

A new report in the Guardian has suggested Man City boss Pep Guardiola is “firmly minded” to leave City in two years when his contract expires.

Pep made history on Saturday, leading Manchester City to their first Champions League win and the treble. The report says since bagging the treble his mind is pretty much made up to leave in the summer of 2025  -he would have spent nine years at the club by the end of his tenure.

Pep signed a new deal in November, extending his stay for another few years. The paper reports that many in his inner circle didn’t believe Pep would sign a new deal. When he arrived at Manchester City in 2016, many didn’t think he’d stay beyond his three-year contract.

Before City, Pep had coached Spain’s Barcelona (also leading them to a treble) and Germany’s Bayern Munich. It was expected that once he had finished working in England he would want to coach a team in the Italian league – meaning he would have coached a team in Europe’s top domestic competitions – and the four top leagues in the world.

But the report says this doesn’t seem likely anymore – could Pep be thinking of coaching an international team? How can we convince him to take over the role in England?

Pep has expressed his hope that City captain Ilkay Gündogan will sign a new one-year contract with Manchester City. It is understood the decision will be made later this week. He is also said to be considering a three-year contract from Barcelona and offers from Saudi Arabia.

The Premier League has two more years of Pep Guardiola – a coach who has helped change football in England. Here’s to hoping he might want to sign on as England’s manager after he calls time on Man City.
