The Independent – Pensioners hit by Reeves plan to fill £22bn black hole
The Independent says pensioners take the brunt of early spending cuts as Rachel Reeves delivers a brutal assessment of the nation’s finances. Elsewhere the front page has images of Team GB athletes as Monday proved to be a fruitful day for the country bagging 5 medals – including two golds.
The stabbing attack in Southport that killed two kids, and news that former BBC presenter Huw Edwards has been charged with making indecent images of kids are at the top of the paper.
Pensioners hit by Reeves’s plan to fill £22bn black hole
Britain’s pensioners will take the brunt of a raft of brutal cuts announced by the new chancellor Rachel Reeves to deal with a £22bn black hole in the country’s finances.
To gasps in the Commons chamber, Ms Reeves announced that she would be removing winter fuel allowance payments for pensioners from almost 7 million of the households that currently receive them.
The bold move on the winter fuel allowance – a benefit that was first introduced by Labour’s Tony Blair in 1997 – is similar to a policy proposed by Theresa May in 2017, when the outcry over the proposal almost sank the Tory election campaign. The plan did not feature in the Labour election manifesto this year, and visibly came as a complete shock to MPs.
Olympics 2024 LIVE: Men’s triathlon postponed due to pollution before Simone Biles in gymnastics final
Day four of the Paris 2024 Olympics is another jam-packed schedule with medals up for grabs in triathlon, gymnastics, fencing, judo, rugby, shooting, surfing, swimming and table tennis.
But the men’s triathlon has been postponed at the last minute due to polluted water in the Seine River, with tests revealing water quality levels that were “still above the acceptable limits” for Tuesday’s race to go ahead on time and leaving athletes facing uncertainy.
This afternoon sees the return of Simone Biles as the American superstar looks to win her fifth Olympics gold in the women’s team final, while Team GB gymnasts Becky Downie, Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Ruby Evans and Abi Martin compete for the podium.
Southport stabbing latest: Taylor Swift ‘in shock’ over fatal knife attack on children as heroic teacher named
Taylor Swift has paid a moving tribute after a fatal knife attack killed two children at a Swiftie-themed dance workshop in Southport.
The singer said she was “at a complete loss” after the “horror attack” which has left nine other children were injured, six of them critically.
She wrote on her Instagram story: “These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”
The emotional statement comes as a hero dance teacher who was injured in Monday morning’s attack while “trying to protect children” is named.
Leanne Lucas, 35, is thought to be one of the organisers behind the Taylor Swift dance workshop where a knifeman targeted both adults and children on Hart Street.
