Review of Vondelpark – Biking and Walking paradise

“Great way to spend the day. The park is lively, open bike paths and walkers and has a dog park. Even in winter the ride was a wonderful way to sightsee a lot of houses in the area and botanical interests”

What to do in Amsterdam if you love exploring and the outdoors

For many of us, holidays aren’t about the usual touristy destinations, but instead, seeking out more authentic experiences can feel like a more fulfilling trip. Exploring any new city can leave you with lifelong memories but few will have a bigger impact than those trips where you get off the beaten track and find the local gems.

Amsterdam is a city that invites exploration, and for adults who love walking, discovering hidden gems, and immersing themselves in the local vibe, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities to enjoy. Whether you’re a nature lover, a history buff, or simply someone who enjoys discovering the sort of areas most visitors will have never heard of, Amsterdam offers a wealth of experiences that go beyond the typical attractions.

Explore Amsterdam’s Hidden Parks and Green Spaces

While Amsterdam is famous for its canals, it’s also home to some stunning parks and green spaces that are perfect for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful escape. Vondelpark, the city’s largest park, is a favourite among locals, with its winding paths, serene ponds, and an open-air theatre. For something quieter, head to Westerpark, a trendy area with art installations, cafes, and plenty of space to relax.

    Enjoy the open spaces

If you’re looking for something more unique, visit Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Its lush greenery and tranquil atmosphere make it a perfect spot for a quiet afternoon. Alternatively, explore Amsterdamse Bos, a sprawling forest on the city’s outskirts, where you can rent a bike, hike through wooded trails, or even paddleboat on the lake.

These sorts of experiences allow the traveller(s) to enjoy nature and avoid the crowds. It can serve as a wonderfully restful experience and the sort of experience we’d encourage anyone suffering from burnout at work to consider.

Walk Along the Canals and Discover Hidden Neighborhoods

Amsterdam’s canal belt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and while it’s a popular tourist spot, there are plenty of ways to explore it like a local. Skip the crowded areas and wander through lesser-known neighbourhoods like Jordaan, a charming district with narrow streets, boutique shops, and cosy cafes. The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) area is another great option, offering a mix of historic architecture and trendy spots.

For a more offbeat experience, explore the Plantagebuurt, a quiet, leafy neighbourhood with a mix of 19th-century architecture and cultural attractions like the Artis Zoo. Or head to Oostelijke Eilanden, a cluster of islands with industrial charm, waterfront views, and a laid-back vibe.

There’s so much history in Amsterdam, that you could truly spend all day just taking in the architecture and the canals. Getting away from the tourist hotspots opens the door to a tranquil experience.

Cycle Through the City and Beyond

    Outdoor Activities in Amsterdam
Cycling and walking is common in Europe

Cycling is a way of life in Amsterdam, and there’s no better way to explore the city like a local than by hopping on a bike. Rent a high-quality bike and pedal through the city’s network of cycling paths, taking in sights like the Amstel River and the Rembrandtpark. For a longer ride, venture outside the city to the Waterland region, where you’ll find picturesque villages, windmills, and open countryside.

If you’re feeling adventurous, join a guided bike tour that focuses on hidden gems and local stories. Many tours take you to lesser-known areas, such as the NDSM Wharf, a creative hub with street art, cafes, and a vibrant cultural scene.

If you’re not European it might come as a bit of a shock to you just how much we walk and cycle places. Public transport is well-developed in European cities if walking isn’t your thing, but to get a truly European experience we’d suggest you get your walking boots on. On top of the obvious health benefits, walking is also great for your mental health.

Discover Amsterdam’s Waterways by Kayak or Paddleboard

For a unique perspective on the city, explore Amsterdam’s canals by kayak or paddleboard. Several companies offer guided tours that take you through quieter waterways, away from the hustle and bustle of the main canals. It’s a fun and active way to see the city while enjoying the water up close.

If you prefer a more relaxed experience, rent a small electric boat and navigate the canals at your own pace. Pack a picnic and enjoy a leisurely afternoon on the water, taking in the city’s stunning architecture and vibrant atmosphere.

What a unique way to relax! It’s another great outdoor adventure and a little different from what you’ll hear from other travellers.

Visit Local Markets and Outdoor Events

Amsterdam’s markets are a great way to experience the city’s local culture. The Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp is one of the largest outdoor markets in Europe, offering everything from fresh produce to unique souvenirs. For something more niche, visit the Noordermarkt, a farmers’ market in the Jordaan neighbourhood, or the IJ-Hallen, a massive flea market held in a former shipyard.

If you’re visiting during the summer, check out outdoor events like Openlucht Theater in Vondelpark, where you can enjoy live performances in a beautiful setting. The Pluk de Nacht outdoor film festival is another highlight, showcasing independent films under the stars.

Local markets are a great place for vintage shopping giving you a truly one-of-a-kind souvenir! No more fridge magnets – get something unique!

Take a Day Trip to the Dutch Countryside

If you’re craving a break from the city, Amsterdam’s surroundings offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor exploration. Visit the Zaanse Schans, a picturesque village with historic windmills, wooden houses, and artisan workshops. Or head to Haarlem, a charming city just 15 minutes away by train, known for its cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and beautiful gardens.

    Keukenhof Gardens
    Keukenhof Gardens

For nature lovers, the Keukenhof Gardens (seasonal) and the National Park Zuid-Kennemerland are must-visit destinations. Both offer stunning landscapes, walking trails, and a chance to connect with nature.

It’s another great option for explorers and lovers of nature. Take a moment to reconnect with nature, stroll along the cobblestone streets or go on a nature walking trail – there are plenty of opportunities to relax and recharge.

Tips for Exploring Amsterdam Like a Local

A few practical tips for explorers.

Wear Comfortable Shoes: Amsterdam is a walkable city, and you’ll want to be prepared for cobblestone streets and long strolls.

Go Early or Late: To avoid crowds, explore popular areas early in the morning or later in the evening.

Talk to Locals: Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with locals—they often have the best recommendations for hidden gems.

Pack for the Weather: Amsterdam’s weather can be unpredictable, so bring layers and a waterproof jacket.

    Amsterdam FAQs

What should you know before going to Amsterdam?

One of the key tips we can give you if you’re a first-time traveller to Amsterdam is to make sure you carry a mix of cash and card and be aware that it’s not a 24/7 city like New York or London. Make sure you budget for a higher tourist tax and book in advance.

What is the new law for tourists in Amsterdam?

In response to a public initiative titled ‘Amsterdam has a choice’, in June 2021 the City Council approved a new policy on tourism, ‘Tourism in balance in Amsterdam‘. The plan sets a maximum number of overnight stays and day visits by tourist, with a maximum of 20 million visitors per year.
