One of the best things about flat-sharing is expanding your horizons and getting to know people’s different religions, values, and culture.
But what happens when these values lead to clashes, or a terrible mistake?
This is something Reddit user SaladMassive7352 learned the hard way, ass he shared on the ‘Am I The A**hole’ Reddit forum that she accidentally let her Jewish and Muslim friends eat pork.
Pork is avoided within the Islamic faith because pigs are considered ‘unclean’ and ‘impure’, while in Judaism the food is banned as it cannot be considered kosher, which is a specific diet preventing people from eating mammals known as ruminants (those that chew cud and have split hooves, such as sheep or cows).
Speaking to the subreddit’s 12.9 million followers, the original poster (OP) begun by explaining how her great-grandmother likes to ‘make a million pies for Thanksgiving.’
‘I’m currently living with a few people in a house we rent together,’ she continued. ‘There are seven of us total and we have some friction but not more than usual I think. Everyone pays on time. Nobody is a jerk about loud noises. We get along. Until now.’
The problem, she explained, all started when she left a pie in the fridge.
She continued: ‘It was there for a few days and then it was gone. I asked why it was gone. My roommates admitted that they were high and ate my pie. They were originally only going to eat a tiny slice I might not notice. But, once again, they were high.
‘They said they were sorry but that the crust was so crisp and flaky they couldn’t help themselves. I told them it was like that because my grandma uses pork lard she tenders herself to make the crust.’
It was this comment that, according to the OP, ’caused a problem because [she] didn’t warn them not to take [her] food.’
‘We have all borrowed food from each other,’ she added. ‘We always pay it back. It has worked for us. But now they are pissed that I didn’t warn them there was pork in the pie.’
To clarify, the OP also noted that she was ‘not mad that they ate the pie.’
‘I would have shared, and warned them, if they had asked,’ she said.
But while some Redditors empathised with the roommates’ concerns, the overriding consensus was that OP was ‘not the a**hole.’
‘The entitlement is incredible,’ RowanRally said in a comment. ‘Had they asked, like considerate and civilised human beings, you’d have told them what was in the pie. But they didn’t.’
Similarly, committedlikethepig remarked that ‘As they stole the pie, they shouldn’t be overly concerned with the ramifications of eating pork.’
A third, redgreenocean added: ‘You aren’t their mother. It’s not your job to foresee possible dumb moves your roommates may make. And they shouldn’t be gobbling down dessert meant for you.’
Some also claimed that the fact her flatmates were high would suggest they weren’t strictly religious, but others recommended the OP get ‘not Kosher’ or ‘haram’ stickers to use in future if she was feeling extra considerate.
After seeing how upset Ross Geller got when his ‘moist maker’ sandwich was snaffled from the work fridge, it seems these folks got off pretty lightly.
