Coin collectors are expected to go wild over a new 50p that features the late Queen.

The Royal Mint is releasing the commemorative coin to honour the BBC’s centenary.

New coins typically feature Britain’s living monarch – but these were produced before Her Majesty died in September.

They will not be re-struck to feature King Charles in order to ‘minimise waste or unnecessary environmental impact’.

The 50p – which can be bought for £11 – is expected to spark ‘high demand’.

But it’s not the last time the country will see its longest reigning monarch on a new coin, the Royal Mint has said.

‘The Queen features on other coins that haven’t been released and were made ahead of the launch date’, a spokesperson told Metro.co.uk.

People will start to notice Charles’ portrait in their change from around December as other new coins gradually enter circulation.

In tribute to the BBC’s global reach, the new 50p shows a broadcasting mast emerging from the earth.

It is inscribed with ‘inform, educate, entertain’ – the values set out by Lord Reith when he founded the organisation in 1922.

‘Coins are miniature pieces of art which tell the stories of our nation’, Rebecca Morgan, the Royal Mint’s director of collector services, said.

‘We are delighted to be working with Britain’s leading national broadcaster to create a special 50p in recognition of their 100 years.

‘An ever-present British institution for most people’s lives, the BBC has had a marked influence on our culture and broadcast some of the most extraordinary moments in British history.

‘With the obverse side of the coin featuring the effigy of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, we do anticipate a high demand for these coins from collectors.’

BBC director-general Tim Davie said the broadcaster was ‘honoured’ by the commemorative coin.

The design ‘perfectly captures the BBC’s huge reach and impact’, he added.

The new coin can be bought from the Royal Mint’s website.
